Swedish researchers have found that each new generation of a purebred dogs is becoming less intelligent, than the pevious one

During their research the sswedish-researchers-have-found-that-each-new-generation-of-a-purebred-dogscientists from the Stockholm University have found that mental and physical abilities of many dog breeds are reduced significantly due to the fact that modern people tend to have a more obedient and pleasant pet.

Thus, selecting the four-legged friends according to these criteria, people are taking the natural evolution of dogs away from them. The natural "rule" dictates - only the strongest and the most smart individuals will survive.

According to the researchers, those dogs, who lived in the XIX century, had much more advantages than their modern descendants. Before there came the fashion for the lap dogs and beauty competitions among animals, dogs were chosen primarily for their strength, sense of smell, ability to hunt and guard the house.

When breeders and buyers start to focus more on the dog's exterior features and calm character, it had finally led to the fact that the purebred dogs have become less attentive and much less capable of learning different commands.

"The modern methods of breeding dogs are affecting behavior and mental abilities of the purebred dogs, as well as  their physical characteristics," - said the author of a research - Kent Svartberg.

During the study, researchers were observing thirteen thousands dogs, making rating out of thirty one breed, based on various characteristics. As a result, the most "untrainable" scientists have named such breeds of lap dogs as the Chihuahua and Papillon.

It is the representatives of this breeds can be seen most often in the hands of celebrities. More than that: by the opinion of the scientists, the better your dog looks, the less intelligent it is.

At the same time Canadian scientists at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver made a research of mental abilities of the purebred dogs and ranked the most intelligent breeds.

According to the study, IQ of the average dog corresponds to the same index in two years old child. They both know about 165 words (especially smart dogs - 250 words), and are able to distinguish the signals and gestures.

Among the other dog's skill are named: the ability to add and subtract numbers from 1 to 5, to navigate, to operate simple machinery, but also to experience joy, anger and disgust. At the same time, more complex emotions - such as guilt - for dogs are not available.

Canadian researchers have ranked the breeds according to their intellectual abilities:

1. Border Collie
2. Poodle
3. German Shepherd
4. Golden Retriever
5. Doberman
6. Collie
7. Labrador Retriever
8. Papillon
9. Rottweiler
10. Australian Shepherd

According to this research, the most difficult to train are: Afghan Hound, Bulldog and Basenji.

Stanley Coren, the leader of the research group, said that the newly bred dogs are generally more intelligent, capable of creative thinking and easier to train, than the representatives of the ancient breeds.
