Did You Know This About Dogs? (part 3)

How many puppies.
Every hour only in the United States are born about 12 500 pups.

How many stray dogs and cats.
In the vicinity of New York there are living up to one million stray dogs and about 500,000 stray cats.

Causes cancer.
The habit of licking the snow in the city may cause cancer in dogs and cats. The urban snow contains heavy metals and other harmful components, that give a major boost to the development of throat cancer in domestic animals.

Pets have the same personal qualities, just like people.
Scientist Gosling asked several dog owners to evaluate their pets on the four personality dimensions: an energetic dog or a lazy dog, good-natured or aggressive, nervous or calm, smart or stupid. Then people who are not familiar with the animals, were observing those dogs in the park, as they were performing some tasks, and evaluated them for the same parameters. Nervousness was estimated by the reaction of the dogs, who saw that the owner goes away with another dog. The ability to find the hidden treat and pick it from under the cover was considered as an indicator of intelligence. 78 dogs of different sizes and different breeds took the test. In general, the owners and the strangers had no disagreement about the personalities of the dogs. It was discovered that personality traits vary within the same breeds: for example, not all Pit Bull Terriers are aggressive, not all English Setters are good natured.

Dogs understand people better than wolves.
Between man and dog there is a unique relationship on the genetic level, and it is inherited. There were two containers placed before the wolf's and the dog's puppies, in one of those containers there was a meat hidden. Then the researchers let the animals to understand, in which container there is a food: scientists have pointed to the "correct" container with gestures, touched or gazed at it. Puppies have won a convincing victory - man's best friends every time were faster to "guess" where is the meat, leaving no chance of wolves. Wolves by their behavioral characteristics are allot better suited to wildlife habitat, where interaction with people is not the highest priority.

Dogs prefer classical music.
Fifty dogs were first given a collection of pop-music to listen (Britney Spears, Robbie Williams and Bob Marley), then - some classical pieces (Bach, Edvard Grieg, "The Seasons" by Vivaldi and "Ode to Joy" by Beethoven) and then - an album of "Metallica". Then the dogs had to listen to recorded human voice and then for some time they were kept in a complete silence. The most nervously animals responded to "Metallica". At the sound of Bach dogs calmed down and relaxed. And the pop music has provided them no more impact than silence.

Forbidden breeds.
In Latvia it is forbidden to keep or breed Pit Bull Terriers, Argentine Dogo, Brazilian Phil, American Staffordshire Terriers, as well as hybrids of these breeds. Dogs of these breeds, purchased before the entry into force of these rules, within a calendar year are subject to castration or sterilization, since it is considered that after these operations, the animals are showing less aggressive behaviors.

In Beijing came into effect a ban on the 41 breeds of dogs, including Dalmatians, German shepherds and Collies. This decision was part of a policy aimed at combating new passion of Beijing residents to the dogs breeding. Recently the Chinese start to love living dogs more than traditionally cooked. As a result the amount of dogs on the streets of the city incredibly increased. Now, however, all breeds whose height exceeds 35 inches will be forbidden. Others are subject to an annual fee of more than $ 60. Also it is forbidden in Beijing to have more than one dog per family.

In 1997, in New Zealand after a series of accidents have been banned a so-called "fighting-breeds": Pit Bull Terriers, Japanese Tojo and Fila Brasileiro. These animals had to be euthanized, and the dogs with an admixture of their blood were sterilized.

In 2001 in France there was also a ban on breeding or purchasing "fighting dogs". All Pit Bull Terriers, purchased before 2001 had to be sterilized.

In 2003 in Israel was issued a law banning the importation of "fighting-breeds": American Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Rottweilers, Tosa Inu (Japanese Mastiff), Fila Brasileiro, Staffordshire Terriers, Pit Bull Terriers, English Bull Terriers and Mastiffs.

In May 2005, Australia joined the ban on Pit Bull Terriers and other dangerous breeds of dogs.
